Jens Risom (May 8, 1916 – December 9, 2016) was a Danish-American furniture designer and entrepreneur. He is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of mid-century modern design in the United States. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Risom was exposed to the world of design from an early age. His father, Sven Risom, was a prominent architect in Denmark, and this familial influence played a significant role in shaping Jens's interest in design and craftsmanship. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, where he honed his skills in furniture design. In 1939, Risom immigrated to the United States, settling in New York City. Shortly after his arrival, he met the renowned architect and designer Hans Knoll. This meeting would prove to be a turning point in Risom's career, as he joined forces with Knoll to establish the Hans Knoll Furniture Company. Together, they aimed to bring European modernism to the American market. Risom's design philosophy was characterized by simplicity, functionality, and affordability. He believed that furniture should be well-crafted, aesthetically pleasing, and accessible to a wide audience. His designs often incorporated natural materials such as wood and woven textiles, reflecting his Scandinavian roots. During World War II, Risom served in the United States Army, working as an interior designer for the Army Air Corps. After the war, he returned to the Hans Knoll Furniture Company, where he continued to contribute his innovative designs. One of his most iconic creations was the Risom Lounge Chair, introduced in 1941. This chair, with its sleek lines and woven webbing, became a symbol of mid-century modern design and remains highly sought after by collectors today. In 1946, Jens Risom decided to venture out on his own and founded Jens Risom Design. His eponymous company quickly gained recognition for its high-quality and affordable furniture. Risom's designs were well-received by both consumers and critics, earning him numerous accolades throughout his career. Over the years, Risom expanded his design repertoire beyond furniture, exploring other areas of decorative arts. He collaborated with renowned architects such as Philip Johnson and Eero Saarinen, contributing to various architectural projects. Jens Risom's contributions to the world of design have left an indelible mark on the furniture industry. His commitment to functional and accessible design, combined with his innovative use of materials, has
