About Philip & Kelvin LaVerne

Philip and Kelvin LaVerne were a father-son duo who made significant contributions to the field of furniture and decorative arts. They were known for their unique and innovative approach to design, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques.

Philip LaVerne (1907-1987) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He initially pursued a career in painting and sculpture, studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. However, it was during the Great Depression that he turned to furniture making as a means of supporting himself and his family.

In the 1940s, Philip LaVerne began experimenting with metal patination techniques, which involved applying layers of acid-resistant materials to metal surfaces and then selectively removing them to create
