Michael Loew (1911-1985) was an American furniture and decorative arts designer known for his innovative and modernist approach. Born on July 7, 1911, in New York City, Loew's passion for design began at an early age. Loew studied at the Art Students League of New York, where he honed his skills in painting and sculpture. He later attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where he further developed his artistic style and explored various mediums. In the 1930s, Loew collaborated with renowned architect and designer Paul Frankl, contributing to the iconic Skyscraper furniture series. This collaboration marked the beginning of Loew's career in furniture design and set the stage for his future contributions to the field. Loew's designs were characterized by clean lines, geometric forms, and a focus on functionality. He embraced the principles of modernism and sought to create furniture that blended seamlessly with contemporary living spaces. His work often featured innovative materials, such as metal and glass, which added a sense of modernity and sophistication to his designs. Throughout his career, Loew worked with various prominent manufacturers, including the renowned Herman Miller Furniture Company. His designs for Herman Miller, such as the "Loewy" chair, showcased his ability to create aesthetically pleasing and comfortable furniture that met the demands of the modern lifestyle. In addition to furniture design, Loew also explored other areas of decorative arts, including ceramics and textiles. His ceramic works, in particular, displayed a unique blend of modernist aesthetics and traditional craftsmanship. Loew's contributions to the field of furniture and decorative arts were widely recognized and celebrated. He received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious Good Design Award from the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Michael Loew continued to create innovative designs until his passing on August 18, 1985. His work remains highly regarded and continues to inspire contemporary designers and artists in the field of furniture and decorative arts.
