During this period, he explored various artistic mediums, including ceramics and painting, developing a unique style that combined elements of abstraction, symbolism, and personal narrative. In the 1960s, Scanga gained recognition for his innovative use of found objects in his sculptures. He often incorporated discarded materials such as wood, metal, and glass into his works, transforming them into poetic and evocative pieces. His sculptures often explored themes of identity, memory, and cultural heritage, reflecting his Italian-American background. Throughout his career, Scanga exhibited his works extensively in both solo and group exhibitions. His artwork can be found in numerous prestigious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. In addition to his sculptural practice, Scanga was also an accomplished painter and printmaker. His paintings often featured vibrant colors and expressive brushwork, while his prints showcased his mastery of various printmaking techniques, including etching and lithography. Scanga's contributions to the art world extended beyond his own artistic practice. He was a dedicated educator, teaching at various institutions, including the University of California, San Diego, and the University of Florida. His passion for teaching and mentoring young artists left a lasting impact on the next generation of creatives. Italo Scanga's artistic career spanned several decades, during which he received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the field of visual arts. His work continues to be celebrated for its ability to evoke emotion, challenge conventions, and explore the complexities of human existence. Scanga's legacy as an artist and educator remains an influential force in the world of contemporary art.
