Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) was an Italian-born American artist, sculptor, and furniture designer. He is best known for his groundbreaking work in the field of modern furniture design and his iconic wire grid chair, commonly known as the "Bertoia chair."

Bertoia was born on March 10, 1915, in San Lorenzo, Pordenone, Italy. At the age of 15, he immigrated to the United States with his family, settling in Detroit, Michigan. In 1936, he attended the Cass Technical High School, where he developed an interest in metalworking and sculpture.

After high school, Bertoia enrolled at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. There, he studied under the renowned designer and architect Eliel Saarinen and his son, Eero Saarinen. Bertoia's time at Cranbrook
