Hans Hartung (1904-1989) was a prominent German-French painter and one of the leading figures of abstract art in the 20th century. Born on September 21, 1904, in Leipzig, Germany, Hartung's artistic journey would take him across Europe and leave an indelible mark on the world of modern art. Hartung's interest in art began at an early age, and he studied painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1924 to 1926. During this time, he developed a fascination with the works of the Expressionist movement and the abstract tendencies emerging in contemporary art. In the late 1920s, Hartung moved to Paris, where he immersed himself in the vibrant artistic scene of the city. It was here that he encountered the works of influential artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Joan Miró, who greatly influenced his artistic style. Hartung's early works showcased a blend of expressionism and surrealism, characterized by bold brushstrokes and dynamic compositions. During World War II, Hartung served in the French Foreign Legion and was severely injured, resulting in the amputation of one of his legs. Despite this adversity, he continued to paint and experiment with different techniques. It was during his recovery period that he began to develop his signature style, characterized by gestural abstraction and an emphasis on the spontaneous and intuitive nature of artistic expression. In the 1950s, Hartung gained international recognition for his innovative approach to painting. He became associated with the Art Informel movement, which emphasized the use of unconventional materials and techniques. Hartung's works from this period featured bold, energetic brushstrokes, often applied with a palette knife or directly with his hands. His paintings were characterized by a sense of movement and dynamism, evoking a sense of tension and emotion. Throughout his career, Hartung exhibited his works extensively, participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world. His paintings can be found in prestigious collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Tate Modern in London. Hans Hartung's contributions to the field of abstract art continue to inspire and influence artists to this day. His bold and expressive brushwork, coupled with his unwavering commitment to artistic experimentation, have solidified his place as one of the most important figures in the history of modern art. Hartung passed away on December 7
