About Eileen Gray

Eileen Gray (1878-1976) was an influential Irish furniture and decorative arts designer and architect. She is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of modern design.

Born Kathleen Eileen Moray Smith on August 9, 1878, in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland, Gray spent her early years in London before moving to Paris in 1902. There, she studied painting at the Slade School of Fine Art and the Académie Julian, where she developed a keen interest in the arts.

In 1907, Gray returned to London and established herself as a successful lacquer artist. She gained recognition for her innovative lacquer work, which combined traditional Japanese techniques with her own artistic vision. Her lacquered screens, panels, and furniture pieces
