Jean Royère (1902-1981) was a renowned French furniture and interior designer, known for his innovative and avant-garde approach to design. Born on August 22, 1902, in Paris, France, Royère's creativity and passion for art were evident from a young age. After completing his education at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Royère began his career as an interior designer in the early 1930s. He quickly gained recognition for his unique style, which blended elements of Art Deco, Surrealism, and Modernism. Royère was particularly admired for his ability to create harmonious and functional spaces that reflected the individuality and personality of his clients. In 1934, Jean Royère established his own design firm, attracting a prestigious clientele that included prominent figures such as King Farouk of Egypt and the Shah of Iran. His work was characterized by the use of luxurious materials, bold colors, and organic shapes, often incorporating unconventional materials such as bamboo and rattan. During the 1950s and 1960s, Royère's designs became increasingly sought after, both in France and internationally. He participated in numerous exhibitions, including the prestigious Salon des Artistes Decorateurs and the Salon des Arts Ménagers. His furniture and decorative objects were highly regarded for their elegance, comfort, and craftsmanship. Some of Royère's most iconic designs include the "Ours Polaire" armchair, which featured a distinctive polar bear shape, and the "Boule" floor lamp, characterized by its spherical shade and slender stem. His furniture pieces often showcased curved lines, organic forms, and a sense of playfulness, reflecting his belief that design should be both functional and visually stimulating. Despite achieving great success during his lifetime, Royère's work fell out of favor in the 1970s as minimalism and other design trends gained popularity. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in his designs, with collectors and design enthusiasts recognizing his significant contributions to the field of furniture and interior design. Jean Royère passed away on May 6, 1981, leaving behind a rich legacy of innovative and timeless designs. His work continues to inspire contemporary designers and remains highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
