About Currier & Ives
Currier & Ives was a prominent American printmaking firm that operated during the 19th century. Founded by Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives, the company became widely known for producing high-quality lithographs that depicted various aspects of American life, including landscapes, historical events, and everyday scenes.
Nathaniel Currier, born on March 27, 1813, in Roxbury, Massachusetts, showed an early interest in art and became an apprentice in a Boston lithography shop at the age of 15. After honing his skills, he established his own lithography business in 1835, initially focusing on producing small-scale prints and book illustrations. Currier's entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to artistic excellence soon propelled his business to success.
