Rococo

Rococo is an artistic movement in French design originating in the 18th century after Baroque. It is notable for asymetrical styles and tended to be over-ornamented. The name is derived from the French words rocaille and coquille rock and shell, both prominent motifs in this decoration.

Acanthus

Acanthus, also called Bear’s Breeches, is a stylized leaf that is native to the Mediterranean. The acanthus leaf motif was first used in classic Greek and Roman architecture, specifically in the design of Corinthian columns and pillars. Today, the acanthus symbolizes longevity and immortality of the soul.

Finial

An ornamental, terminating piece that extends vertically from the apex of a design. In architecture, they are found at the tips of gables or spires, and in furniture, as top ornaments on cabinet corners, posts, or supports. Finial also refers to the decorative metal piece used to affix lampshades to table and floor lamps. They often take the shape of a ball, flame, flower, acorn, pineapple, or vase.

Stretcher

A stretchers is a stabilizing support rail which runs horizontally between furniture legs. These often form X, H, or Y shapes in conjunction with the outside rails.

Console table

Starting in the 17th Century, console tables were side table usually fixed to a wall with front legs for support. Frequently the backside of consoles are left undecorated as they are viewed only from the front or sides and were created with the intent of display, often serving as pier table underneath a large mirror. Contemporary references to console tables can also indicate a freestanding relatively tall, rectangular table that is placed against a entrance wall or sofa.
